WB Games announced today during San Diego Comic Con Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, the new expansion of the acclaimed fighting game, which will introduce the next phase of its story mode that touches on themes of peace and anarchy, and will also include Kombat Pack 2, which will add six new playable characters.
The expansion will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and PC starting September 24 of this year.
The invaders threatening the peaceful New Era of Fire God Liu Kang have been repelled; now Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns will expand the campaign story with a new cinematic narrative. When a terrible threat emerges from another timeline, led by the ruthless Titan Havik, whose only goal in this realm is to sow chaos, Liu Kang will have to summon his champions and instill fear in his enemies to overcome this grave danger. If he fails, the New Era will fall prey to anarchy.
The reimagined universe of Mortal Kombat 1 is enriched
The roster of playable characters continues to grow, with Kombat Pack 2 seeing the return of fighters such as Noob Saibot, Cyrax and Sektor. Each will have a new backstory reimagined for the Mortal Kombat 1 universe. As Sub-Zero, Bi-Han served as the ruthless Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei, until his soul was stolen by the Titan Havik to create the perfect henchman: Noob Saibot, whose sole duty is to stir up anarchy.
Cyrax was born into the Zaki clan, one of the clans operating under the Lin Kuei, and grew up to become a martial arts prodigy; with an indomitable independence, she is determined to serve the clan, but only on her own terms. Having grown up surrounded by the culture of the Lin Kuei and under the tutelage of her parents, Sektor grew up to be a skilled armorer, an elite warrior, and Sub-Zero’s trusted lieutenant; she is determined to move the clan forward into a prosperous future, no matter the cost.
Iconic pop culture characters arrive in the new Kombat Pack
Kombat Pack 2 will also introduce a new cast of guest fighters: Ghostface, the recurring identity of the antagonists of the hit horror franchise Scream, who will be voiced by Roger L. Jackson; the T-1000 Terminator, the deadly cybernetic assassin made of liquid metal that appeared in the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day, will be voiced and likened by actor Robert Patrick; and Conan the Barbarian, the imposing warrior who stars in the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, will be voiced and likened by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“We believe Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns will mark the start of an exciting second year of content that will continue the cinematic story, add more fighters and mark the return of beloved mechanics from the franchise,” said Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of Mortal Kombat. “The expansion marks the long-awaited return of the Animalities, via a free content update for all Mortal Kombat 1 players and as a thank you to our amazing community.”
