Morocco’s National Strategic Plan to Eradicate AIDS by 2030: Progress, Challenges, and Support

2023-12-01 21:46:59

Like other countries in the world, Morocco celebrates World AIDS Day under the slogan “Let’s fight once morest the inequalities that slow down progress to end AIDS” and encourages the strengthening of availability, quality and compliance of healthcare services to combat stigma and exclusion linked to HIV infection.

This celebration is part of the National Strategic Plan to Fight AIDS 2023, which aims to put Morocco on the path to eradicating the epidemic by 2030, in accordance with the sustainable development goals.

Note that the combined efforts of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and its partners made it possible in 2021 to screen 83% of people with HIV according to estimates.

In this context, in addition to access to screening services which is free, people living with HIV are fully supported by the structures of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection in compliance with equity and human rights.

It should be remembered that the HIV prevalence rate remains low, at around 0.08%, remaining higher for the key vulnerable population. Around 23,000 people, including 830 recently infected, live with HIV in Morocco.

The measures put in place have made it possible to multiply by 4.5 the number of people with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment between 2011 and 2021, i.e. an increase in coverage from 24% to 80% in 35 referral centers for the care of people living with HIV, with a national offer of 14 laboratories equipped for the diagnosis and biological monitoring of these patients.
