Morocco tops the ranking of the Information and Communication Technology Development Index (IDI) of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), with a score of 85.1, according to the latest report from the organization for the year 2023.
This score exceeds the global average located at 72.8 out of 100, as well as the average in Africa located at 47.4, according to this report entitled “Measuring digital development: the 2023 ICT development index”.
By indicator, Morocco far exceeds the world average (which is 70.5%) with regard to the percentage of “Individuals using the internet”, and records a rate of 92.8%.
In terms of “Households with home internet access” and 3G/4G Coverage, the respective global averages of which are 70.8% and 92.5%, the Kingdom remains well positioned with rates respectively 90.7% and 99.2%.
Furthermore, the said report highlights that among the 10 economies with an IDI score above 95, four belong to the Arab States, three to Europe (Denmark, Estonia, Finland), two to Asia-Pacific and one to the Americas. .
Similarly, in the Asia-Pacific group, there is a gap of 69 points between the best performing country (98.4) and the worst performing country (28.9). Twenty-five of the 33 African economies included in the IDI score below 50 points.
The IDI considers two types of connectivity: universal and meaningful. The first takes into account the connectivity of people, households and communities, regardless of their location, urban or rural, their gender and their level of education.
Meaningful connectivity, in turn, depends on several factors, called “connectivity facilitators”. These include infrastructure, affordability, devices, skills, safety and security, which play an important role in improving connectivity.
