Morocco’s friends are our enemies

Un circle of caciques who use all the means and subterfuges to affiliate and perpetuate the Bouteflika system. A system however disputed and reviled by the Algerian people and whose most eloquent and significant expression was the hirak.

A rogue State lives in schizophrenia: it sees in its enemies, and even more so in its friends, the flaws it carries around.

A rogue State is always in the embezzlement: it is the only way to perpetuate the undue privileges.

Finally, a rogue State has no friends, but forms cosmetic friendships: it only has occasional allies through relations governed by relationships of interest. And when there are no more interests, the relationship dies.

This is what is happening in Algeria now. Abandoned by her former partners, increasingly isolated on the international scene, castigated for her diplomacy of the absurd, she finds herself without friends. Not even casual friends. Nothing. Wow.

And alone, she will be even more so since she adopted as a dogma “The friends of Morocco are my enemies”.

Because the Algerian power monitors the Kingdom like milk in the making. As a “good neighbour”, the slightest diplomatic victory of Morocco pisses it off, especially when it concerns the Moroccan Sahara.

Recall just two years ago. The southern provinces were the scene of a resounding diplomatic ballet, with the opening of several representations from sub-Saharan African countries in the cities of Laâyoune and Dakhla.

Algiers then saw red, exerting pressure on these countries and summoning their ambassador. The Algerian regime even went so far as to ask these sovereign states not to participate in the annual session of the Crans Montana Forum, which was scheduled for March 18 to 21, 2020 in Dakhla.

Today, he is attacking Spain. A sovereign country which has subscribed unreservedly to international legality by adhering to a historical truth: the Moroccanness of the Sahara.

As a response to this decision, “Algeria has decided to proceed with the immediate suspension of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation which it concluded on October 8, 2002 with the Kingdom of Spain and which governed until here the development of relations between the two countries”, informs the Presidency of the Republic in a declaration, on June 8.

In the process, the Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (ABEF) sent a note to the CEOs of the said entities to ask them “to freeze the bank domiciliations of foreign trade operations of products and services, from and to the Spain, from June 9, 2022”.

As it had done with Morocco, by unilaterally deciding to close the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME), it is therefore an economic war that Algiers has just declared against Madrid.

But does the Algerian power have the means for its policy? Can he take the risk of alienate Spain politically and economically, and by extension the European Union ? Shouldn’t a country so socially unstable rather seek to multiply its partnerships in order to be part of a logic of sustainable development?

It seems useful to remind the simple-minded: anger is a bad adviser. Especially when she meets men inhabited by a terrible intellectual desert. On good terms…
