Last June, the consumer price index in Morocco slowed to 5.5% year-on-year compared to May, with a decline of 0.9% month-on-month. This variation is the result of a 12.7% increase in food products and 0.6% in non-food products

Among non-food products, there was an increase of 6% in restaurants and hotels, 4.5% in education, 3.6% in clothing and footwear, as well as 3.5% in furniture, household items and routine household maintenance. On the other hand, prices fell by 5.6% in the transport sector.

Over the first half of the year as a whole, the consumer price index rose by 7.9% over one year. The price index for food products thus increased by 16.2%, while that for non-food products increased by 2.4%. From one month to another, the CPI recorded a decline of 0.9%, mainly due to the drop of 2.4% in the index of food products and the increase of 0.1% in that of non-food products.

In detail, the decreases in food products observed between May and June mainly concern fish and seafood with -6.4%, vegetables (-5.5%), meat (-4.3%), fruit (-3.5%), as well as milk, cheese and eggs (-1%). On the other hand, prices increased by 1.3% for mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices.

For non-food products, the decline mainly concerned fuel prices (-0.2%). Regarding price variations by city, it is in Beni-Mellal that prices fell the most with a drop of 2.2%, followed by Safi (-2.1%), Settat (-1.9%), Kénitra and Dakhla (-1.8%), as well as Meknes and Al Hoceïma (-1.5%).

Broadly speaking, the core inflation indicator, which excludes products at volatile prices and products at public prices, would have seen an increase of 0.1% during the month of June 2023 compared to the month of May 2023 and 5.6% compared to the month of June 2022.
