Climate commitment and energy transition

Leila Benali highlighted the importance of the energy transition, particularly in the development of technologies such as green hydrogen and green ammonia. These initiatives are an integral part of Morocco’s investment plans, demonstrating the country’s commitment to climate issues. The minister also addressed the need for a collaborative approach to tackling global challenges such as plastic pollution.

Morocco, currently president of the United Nations Environment Assembly, is seeking to adopt bolder measures to combat these problems. Benali highlighted the effectiveness of the Bretton Woods institutions, while recognizing the need to adapt the multilateral system to the realities of the 21st century.

World Economic Forum and global issues

Regarding the role of the World Economic Forum, Benali praised the organization’s ability to bring together diverse stakeholders to address global issues at the local and regional level. It highlighted issues such as air pollution and water management, problems particularly relevant to Morocco, an agricultural country facing immediate climate challenges.

The discussion also covered the minerals forum in Riyadh, where Benali addressed the issue of critical metals and minerals for the energy transition. She emphasized the need for a sustainable approach that is not limited to the environmental aspect, but also encompasses social issues such as human rights and child labor.

Finally, when asked about the policies needed in Morocco to balance economic growth and environmental sustainability, Benali highlighted the country’s national sustainable development strategy. This strategy, developed with the participation of the population, aims to overcome the middle income trap and promote sustainable and inclusive development.
