Morocco’s advances in micro-irrigation showcased in Dakhla – Today Morocco

This international, scientific and technical meeting is an opportunity for many experts, professionals and decision-makers from different countries to exchange their experiences in the field of the application of recent technological developments and digitalization in the economy and water valuation.

The kick-off of the 10th International Conference on Micro-Irrigation (10IMIC) was given on Wednesday in Dakhla in the presence of a host of experts and researchers, and which was a good opportunity to present the important effort made to save irrigation water in Morocco. Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this international, scientific and technical meeting is an opportunity for many experts, professionals and decision-makers from different countries to exchange their experiences in the field of the application of recent technological developments and digitalisation in terms of water saving and valuation, with a view to sustainable development and better resilience to climate change.

Initiated by the National Association of Land Improvements, Irrigation, Drainage and Environment (Anafide) in partnership with the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), the Ministry of Agriculture, maritime fishing, rural development and water and forests and in collaboration with the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), this event has as its theme “Micro-irrigation in the era of technological innovation and of digital transformation”. Morocco was chosen by ICID to organize the 10IMIC following the request made by the Moroccan committee to ICID during the works of the 3rd World Irrigation Congress, held in Bali, Indonesia from 01 to 07 September 2019.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki stressed that the agricultural strategies of the Plan Maroc Vert 2008-2020 and Génération Green 2020- 2030, have placed control of water use in agriculture at the heart of the measures adopted. Sadiki noted that “Morocco has developed significant know-how in the field of design, implementation and operation of micro-irrigation projects, noting that the Kingdom is acquiring a fabric of companies important players active in the entire micro-irrigation value chain, from the manufacture of the equipment to the installation of the equipment, its operation and advice on irrigation. More than 750,000 ha are equipped with water-saving irrigation facilities”.

Remember that this event is being organized for the first time in North Africa since the first edition, held in Israel in 1971, the 9th edition was organized in India in 2019. This meeting is marked by the participation of several countries from the five continents, namely South Africa, Nigeria, Niger, Burkina-Faso, Senegal, Djibouti, Egypt, Mauritania, England, France, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Lithuania, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Japan, China (in distance), the United States and Australia.
