Morocco chosen as host country for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN), following the withdrawal of its competitors including Algeria. The news was made official on Wednesday September 27 in Cairo by Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The 2027 edition will be held in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, he added during a press conference.

Morocco organized a CAN in 1988 and was designated for 2015 before requesting a postponement due to the Ebola virus. But CAF finally decided to withdraw this attribution and to disqualify the Moroccan team from the competition.

“I am very proud of Morocco,” said Patrice Motsepe. Morocco’s competing countries – Algeria, Zambia, joint candidacy of Nigeria and Benin – “announced their withdrawal, even if these countries still made their presentation,” he said.

“The main reason is to support Morocco in its candidacy for the 2030 World Cup”, jointly with Spain and Portugal, explained the CAF president.
