On the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the Stockholm Peace Research Institute published a report, revealing that Morocco is among the countries that contribute the most to UN peacekeeping operations , in various conflict zones around the world.

In its report entitled “Multilateral Peace Operations in 2022: Developments and Trends”, the institute indicated that Morocco ranked ninth in Africa, among the countries that contribute the most to UN peacekeeping forces, with 1,716 soldiers mobilized for peace.

Uganda ranked first in Africa, with 6,136 individuals, followed by Burundi (5,057), Rwanda (4,795), Kenya (4,931), Ethiopia (4,710), Ghana ( 2,515), Egypt (2,153), Senegal (1,799), then Morocco.

At the global level, Morocco ranked 14th and at the Maghreb level, it came first, given that UN peacekeeping missions do not include Algeria or Libya. Tunisia contributes with 873 members, while Mauritania participates with 475 soldiers.

During the year 2022, 64 multilateral peace operations were carried out in 38 countries and territories around the world, which represents a considerable evolution since the last decade. Of the 64 operations, 24 were carried out in sub-Saharan Africa, 18 in Europe, 14 in North Africa and the Middle East (MENA), 5 in Asia and 3 in the Americas.

In addition, the number of international personnel deployed in multilateral peace operations around the world increased by 2.79% in 2022, reaching 114,984 as of December 31. The largest annual change in numbers being an increase of 3,771 (4.2%) in sub-Saharan Africa, alongside a decline of 541 (-6.7%) in Europe.

The report indicates that geopolitical rivalries affect multilateral peace processes, especially since the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This war has exacerbated already strained relations, particularly between Western countries and the allies of Moscow.
