Morocco prevents illegal entry of some 189 Moroccans into Melillia

The detainees, men and women, are all Moroccans from the Nador region. According to “El Faro de Melilla”, which quotes Moroccan sources, strict control has been put in place in anticipation of any new attempt at mass migration to Melillia which might “disrupt the atmosphere of the end of the year celebrations”.

The border in the occupied town of Sebta is also on high alert in anticipation of attempted massive entry of migrants, Spanish news agency EFE reports, adding that police sources said the Civil Guard and National Police Spanish were “on high alert” and ready to respond at any time, although there have been no incidents so far.

According to EFE, the Moroccan security services have strengthened, since December 24, the control of the enclave to avoid a massive eruption almost seven months following the incident of 2021. Last May, thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries and the Morocco swam from the town of Fnideq to the Spanish enclave of Sebta.

Morocco has stepped up its efforts once morest irregular migration and human trafficking. In 2021, the Moroccan police dismantled 150 criminal networks active in the organization of irregular migration.

During these security operations, Moroccan security services arrested 415 suspects for their alleged links with migrant smuggling networks, as well as 12,231 irregular migrants.
