Morocco, one of the strongest manufacturing economy in Africa

Morocco has been engaged for a long time in the trajectory of industrialization. Year after year, the kingdom attests to the rest of the world of its strong performance as a competitive industrial hub in multiple sectors, including automotive and energy renewable.

Considered as an important lever of national economic growth, industry is given particular attention. Over the years, multiple policies have been put in place and various actions have been undertaken to promote the industrial sector and improve its ranking regionally and internationally. Accumulated from year to year, these efforts are now bearing fruit.

Indeed, Morocco has taken a big step in various sectors, in this case those of the automobile and renewable energies.

Performances that allowed him to rise to the top 5 of countries having acquired sophisticated production capacities, occupying the 2th place in the ranking of the Africa Industrialization Index (AII), as indicated by new report of the African Development Bank (AfDB) entitled “ Africa Industrialization Index 2022”.

In this sense, the AfDB qualifies Morocco as one of the strongest manufacturing economies in Africa. Emphasizing that ” lhe government has given priority to industrial development, particularly in the automotive sector” .

Indeed, this sector has recorded a notable improvement in recent years. Thing which allowed him to occupy a place of choice in the club of major automobile manufacturers.

Noting in this regard that car production amounted to around 700,000 units this year,thus posting a growth of more than 34%. Knowing that thehe government aims to increase production to one million cars a year by 2025.

The vehicle export rate has, for its part, reached around 70%, according to data released by the Minister of Industry, Ryad Mezzour. While the rest is marketed nationally. The automotive sector has also achieved sales of 100 billion dirhams in 2022 while creating around 220,000 jobs.

It should, all the same, be specified that Morocco isxports other products such as power distribution equipment to global markets including Europe, the United States and Brazil. This has enabled it to cover 21.1% of total exports of manufactured products in Africa, thus overtaking its direct competitors such as Tunisia and Egypt.

A strong performance, thanks to which, Morocco is on the way to becoming the most industrialized country in Africa.

Morocco has also distinguished itself in the renewable energy sector. A sector with high potential to which the kingdom pays particular attention in order to ensure its energy transition. The figures testifying to the rise of the country in this field are not lacking.

Indeed, during the last two decades, Morocco has managed to become a leader in this field. Emphasizing, in this sense, that the installed capacity in Morocco, at the end of 2021, was 4,050 MW out of a total capacity of 10,743 MW, i.e. a share of nearly 38% of the energy mix. In this respect, the kingdom seeks to increase its energy mix in order to reach 52% in 2030 and 80% by 2050. And this, thanks to massive investments. Knowing that green hydrogen alone requires an amount of 90 billion dirhams of investment by 2030 and 760 billion by 2050.
