Morocco moves up 10 places in the 2022 Global Innovation Index

Speaking on the occasion of the hybrid launch event of the GII, on September 29, 2022 in Geneva, Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade, underlined that the Kingdom of Morocco has gained 10 places in the Global Index of Innovation (Global Innovation Index-GII) of 2022.

The Minister recalled the importance given by Morocco to industrial property (IP) and innovation, he said: “Industrial property is more than ever considered a real lever for growth and a must-have for development. and economic recovery.

Morocco was a forerunner in this field, it has a century-old system of industrial property, which covers the mechanisms for protecting creations and innovations as well as the tools for enforcing rights.

This century-old system has evolved and adapted over the years. Today our vision for 2035, through the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC), is that: “Industrial and Commercial Property is at the service of a productive, innovative and inclusive national economy” .

“The Ministry of Industry and Trade aims, through OMPIC, to provide young creators and innovators and SMEs with a set of tools and programs to support them in taking advantage of their creations at through the protection and enhancement of their industrial property as well as through the development of their skills and by providing monitoring and information services in this field” also declared the Minister.

According to the 2022 edition of the GII, Morocco rose from 77th place to 67th place out of the 132 economies assessed. The Kingdom is 6th among the 36 countries in the category of lower-middle-income economies and 8th among the 19 countries in the MENA region.

Morocco also stands out in the intangible assets component, with its ranking in 23rd place. In particular, it is ranked: 9th according to the indicator relating to design filings by origin and GDP, 33rd in the indicator relating to trademark filings by origin and GDP, and 51st for patent applications filed internationally according to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) by origin and GDP.

As a reminder, the Global Innovation Index (GII) has been developed since 2007 by the World Intellectual Property Organization, Cornell University and INSEAD. It is a tool for measuring the capacities and performance of countries in terms of innovation through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 80 indicators covering the main aspects of innovation (Institutions, Human Capital and Research, Infrastructure, Business Sophistication , Knowledge & Technology Products and Creativity Products).
