Morocco launches first two nanosatellites into space

Rabat – Morocco announced, yesterday, Thursday, the “launch of the first two university nanosatellites” by a SpaceX rocket, starting from the Vandenberg base in California, USA.

This came according to a statement by Mohammed V University in Rabat (governmental), a copy of which was obtained by Anadolu Agency.

The university said: “The first two Moroccan university nanosatellites (UM5-EOSat and UM5-Ribat) were launched by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket (American).

She added: “The operation took place on August 16, and is the result of cooperation between the university, the Moroccan Center for Scientific and Technical Research (governmental), and the Royal Center for Space Studies and Research (governmental).”

She added: “The partnership between the three scientific institutions aims to create a new generation of Moroccan university researchers and engineers in the field of space technologies.”

Mohammed V University says that “the two satellites have a mass of less than 4 kilograms each.”

She explained that the “UM5-EOSat” satellite is equipped with a camera that monitors the Earth, and the “UM5-Ribat” satellite is equipped with a software-defined radio.

One of the two satellites will be responsible for “communications tasks, especially locating aircraft and ships, and collecting data from ground stations.”

Over the next two months, Moroccan researchers will conduct performance tests and confirm the good performance of the two satellites, and the data obtained by them will be made available to Moroccan universities.

Morocco joined the Arab space club in 2001, by launching a remote sensing satellite, “Zarqa Al Yamamah” or “Maroc-TopSat.”
