Flap at the head of the peloton
At the bottom of the scale, Cotonou and Lomé impose the lowest minimum wage with respectively 52,000 F CFA (79.27 euros) and 52,500 F CFA (80.03 euros). The two sub-Saharan neighbors are followed by Cameroon, the leading economy in the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (Cemac), with 60,000 CFA francs (91.46 euros), Senegal at 64,223 CFA francs (97.90 euros), and Côte d’Ivoire at 75,000 F CFA (114,33 euros).
At the top of this ranking, Morocco offers a guaranteed interprofessional minimum wage of 2,970 dirhams (273.38 euros), more than double the minimum wage established in Côte d’Ivoire. Moreover, the Moroccan government should increase the Smig to reach 3,111 dirhams [286,38 euros] from next September, while inflation continues to climb, exceeding 10% in 2023, according to figures from the High Planning Commission.
On the continent, 32 million people, or regarding 24% of employees, are paid at or below the minimum wage, according to data from the International Labor Office (ILO). “In Africa, there are minimum wages in 47 of the 54 countries in the region”, underlines the ILO in its world report (2020-2021) on time wages of covid.
