The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) launched, on Wednesday, a preliminary request for proposals to select qualified companies to build a solar power plant in the Atlas Mountains.
(Mazen) asked developers to submit pre-qualification documents by October 20, to finance, build and operate the 400-megawatt Noor-Midelt 3 plant, which works with photovoltaic technology.
In 2019, an EDF-led consortium won the bid to build the first phase of the project, Noor-Midelt 1, an 800-MW solar power plant designed to combine photovoltaic (PV) and CSP technologies.
The first phase of this project has not yet been completed despite the passage of four years, and sources say that one of the reasons for this is disagreements over concentrated solar energy technology.
And (Mazen) announced last month that six consortia of companies qualified to compete to build a solar power plant with a capacity of 400 megawatts, in the Atlas Mountains, dubbed “Noor Midelt 2”, and it is a station with a storage capacity that lasts for two hours.
In 2022, renewables accounted for 18 percent of the country’s total electricity production, while coal accounted for the rest.
Renewable energy currently accounts for 40 percent of the country’s actual capacity, and Morocco plans to increase this percentage to 52 percent by 2030.
