Morocco “directly threatens” Spain, says former army chief

Morocco is a “direct threat” to Spain. This is the observation of the former head of the armies of the Iberian neighbor, from 2017 to 2020, General Fernando Alejandre, in his book: “The King served and the homeland honored”, reports this Sunday March 13 Europa Press.

The military believes that Morocco will materialize its threats “when the time comes”, but before entering into a conventional armed conflict, the kingdom will launch hybrid operations, such as the assaults on the borders of Ceuta and Melilla. General Alejandre warned of “a serious threat” that should not be taken lightly.

As a reminder, the current Chief of the Armed Forces, Admiral Teodoro López Calderón, has indicated, in November 2021, during his participation in a conference open to the public, that “Morocco does not constitute a threat to Ceuta and Melilla”. However, he acknowledged that there are actions on the part of Rabat falling within the framework of what is called “grey zone”, citing in particular the migration crisis of May 2021 during the exodus of thousands of Moroccans to Ceuta .

The admiral affirmed, on this occasion, that “Morocco has never expressed its desire to annex the two autonomous cities by force”, adding that “Spain has a deterrent capacity which is not limited only to its armed forces. He also underlined that “at the moment Morocco’s main rival” is Algeria, adding that the Western Sahara conflict is “the most serious problem” that Rabat has to face.
