Morocco and Nigeria are continuing their collaboration to materialize the major pipeline project that will benefit several West African countries.

On Friday, the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) of Morocco concluded four cooperation agreements with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and oil operators from four countries, namely Guinea, Liberia, Benin and the Ivory Coast.

The signature was done in coordination with the National Petroleum Operations Company of Côte d’Ivoire (PETROCI), the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), the National Hydrocarbons Company of Benin (SNH-Benin) and the National Company of oil from Guinea (SONAP).

NNPC Group Managing Director Malam Mele Kyari welcomed the signing of the new cooperation agreements saying, “We are also pleased to welcome our counterparts from NOCAL from Liberia, PETROCI from Côte d’Ivoire, SNH Benin and SONAP from Guinea who have committed to working with us on this project by signing a cooperation agreement.

He added that the signing testifies to a “clear manifestation of the commitment of the host governments, the ECOWAS Commission and the national oil companies to implement this strategic project, to create wealth and value for our countries and other stakeholders”.

The Guardian Nigeria quoted Kyari as underscoring the importance of the project, noting that collective decisions and actions are guided by a common vision that “would go well beyond the supply of gas to drive prosperity and economic integration between our nations”.

Several other countries also concluded cooperation agreements with Morocco and Nigeria last year, including Mauritania and Senegal, as well as Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone and Ghana.

The signature testifies to the shared commitment of the countries to implement this strategic project.

In April, Nigerian media outlet The Nation reported that NNPCL would invest $12.5 billion to acquire a 50% stake in the pipeline project.

In a speech last year in November, King Mohammed VI described the project as “strategic and beneficial for all of West Africa”.

The project will enable Morocco to accommodate 1,672 kilometers of pipeline that will benefit more than 400 million people in West Africa.
