Morocco among the least exposed to the terrorist threat

In the tenth edition of its report on the impact of terrorism on countries and its different trends, the Institute for Economics and Peace unveiled its “Global Terrorism Index 2023”, which ranks Morocco 83rd, the scale of countries affected by the terrorist threat, with a score of 0.757.

Recall that the Kingdom was ranked 76th internationally last year. According to the same report, Morocco has moved 7 steps away from the risk of terrorism, recording a variation of 0.397 between 2021 and 2022.

The MENA region continues on the same positive trend for the fifth consecutive year. It has seen an overall improvement of 6% in 2022, thanks to 14 countries which have contributed positively to it, once morest three other countries whose security situation has deteriorated, notes the report, referring to the United Arab Emirates, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Iran.

Globally, Afghanistan is ranked first, followed by Burkina Faso, Somalia, Mali, Syria, Pakistan and Iraq. China, Cuba, South Korea, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar are among the 71 countries that rank among the least affected countries.

Morocco is thus ranked in the category of countries that have not recorded any terrorist attack during the last five years in the MENA region alongside Kuwait, Qatar, Oman. On the other side, terrorism has spread to several countries including Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Algeria and Libya.

Regarding the Maghreb, Morocco is the least affected by terrorism. The index revealed that Libya is the country most affected by terrorism, carving out the 32nd rank in the world, followed by Algeria (47th globally) and Tunisia (40th). As for Mauritania, it is not far from the Kingdom, given that it ranked 87th globally.

Sub-Saharan Africa is referred to as the “hub of terrorism”, with the Sahel responsible for more deaths in 2022 than South Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. The number of deaths of victims in the Sahel constituted 43% of deaths in the world in 2022, up 7% compared to the past year, compared to only 1% recorded in 2007. This is, in this case , of two countries, Burkina Faso and Mali, which account for 73% of terrorism deaths worldwide in 2022 and 52% of all terrorism deaths in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the same source, Daesh and its affiliates continue to be the deadliest terrorist groups in the world in 2022 for the eighth consecutive year, striking nearly 21 different countries, followed by Al-Shabab (Somalia), the Balochistan and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimeen.
