Moroccan Tomato Exports soar to $990 million, outpacing competitors and expanding global presence

Nearly 716,700 tonnes of Moroccan tomatoes were exported, for the 2022/23 campaign, to foreign markets, generating around $990 million in export revenue. Thus, in five years, the volume of tomato exports from Morocco has increased by more than 25%. Furthermore, within ten years, the Kingdom showed the fastest growth rates among the largest exporters of these vegetables.

It should be noted that tomatoes occupy a central place in Morocco’s foreign trade. In 2022-2023, they represented almost a third of total fruit and vegetable exports. “Tomatoes are exported all year round, with a peak observed from November to March,” explains the specialist site.

Furthermore, Morocco has expanded its presence on the international market, currently exporting tomatoes to 44 countries, almost double the number of countries served only six years ago, when some 24 countries were concerned.

The main destination for Moroccan tomatoes remains the European market. In the first quarter of 2023, a third of the total tonnes of tomatoes sold in the European Union came from Morocco. This trend has strengthened over time, with Moroccan tomato exports to the EU increasing by 38.05% between 2018 and 2022, while Spanish exports saw a decrease of 23.97% over the period. same period, as reported by Fresh Plaza, another specialized portal.

France, ranked third in the world ranking of tomato importers after the United States and Germany, remains the main customer of Moroccan tomatoes. In this regard, more than half of all exports from the Kingdom are intended for the French market. Significant quantities of tomatoes are also exported to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

However, Moroccan tomato exports to Russia have seen a remarkable decline, going from more than 20% of all export volumes in 2016 to almost none since 2021.

Five years ago, Moroccan producers achieved a breakthrough by exporting their first shipments of tomatoes to Belgium. The previous year, Moroccan tomatoes also found their way onto the Danish, Czech and Austrian markets.

It should be recalled that Morocco ranked third as the third exporter of tomatoes in 2022, surpassing Iran and Spain, thus consolidating its position among the five largest global exporters since 2021.
