Nouakchott – The president of the Mauritanian-Moroccan association for the defense of Maghreb unity, Cheikhani Ould Cheikh, described the change in Spain’s position on the Moroccan Sahara issue and its support for the initiative of autonomy under the sovereignty of the Kingdom, of “historic diplomatic victory” for Morocco.

This is a “historic diplomatic victory for Morocco under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI”, he said in a statement to MAP.

In this context, he stressed that this decision will allow the two kingdoms to jointly redefine the contours of relations to meet the requirements of the 21st century and the new challenges facing the region.

The researcher also considered “the timing” of the announcement of the new Spanish decision as “strategic”, calling on the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara, Staffan De Mistura to take into consideration the new Spanish position in his report to be submitted to the Security Council in April.

He affirmed that the opening of a new page in relations between Rabat and Madrid might contribute to the development of investments between Europe and Africa and Euro-Maghreb relations.

Mr. Ould Cheikh considered it imperative to set up a strengthened partnership between Morocco and Spain through a new clear and ambitious roadmap in accordance with the Royal Speech of August 20.
