Paris: Moroccan feminist painter Zineb Fasiki won the prize for artistic courage presented annually by the International Comic Strip Festival in Angoulême, France.

The 27-year-old artist is known for denouncing discrimination once morest women and promoting in her work women’s freedom of clothing and expression.

She was especially famous for publishing in 2019 a picture book entitled “Hashouma” (“flaw” in Moroccan dialect), which included caricatures and satirical images related to the view of sex and the body of women, especially in Moroccan society.

“Sexual and physical liberation is not an invention of other countries, but rather reflects our natural needs and rights, whatever our nationality,” the Angouleme Festival Committee said in a statement.

The committee awarded the award to the Moroccan artist in recognition of “her words, her courage and the beauty of her work.”

The award was established in 2016 to honor authors who challenge literary censorship.

During the 2020 edition, the award was given to the opposition Algerian painter Abdelhamid Amine, known as “Neem”, who was imprisoned in 2019 for publishing satirical cartoons denouncing the strong influence of the military in the country.
