Moroccan nationality code. Representatives adopt a new provision

The House of Representatives unanimously adopted, Monday during a legislative session, two bills, one of which is considered to supplement Article 11 of Dahir no. 1.58.250 on the Code of Moroccan nationality.

This proposal aims to “conform to the provisions of Dahir no. 1.58.250 on the Code of Moroccan nationality, in particular its article 11, with the provisions of the Constitution which made Amazigh an official language of the State alongside the Arabic language”.

This legislative initiative, presented by the Istiqlalian Group for Unity and Egalitarianism, is part of “the proper application of the provisions of the Constitution which have made Amazigh an official language of the State, as a common heritage of all Moroccans without exception, and in order to align with the Constitution the provisions of article 11 of Dahir no. 1.58.250 on the Code of Moroccan nationality, which sets the conditions that must be met by any person wishing to obtain Moroccan nationality, in order to give Amazigh its true constitutional meaning and ensure that the law complies with this new constitutional orientation “.

This bill stipulates that “adequate knowledge of the Arabic and Amazigh languages, or one of them” constitutes one of the naturalization conditions required by the Dahir.
