Moroccan Melon Exports Surge: Insights and Challenges in the Agriculture Sector

2024-02-24 23:00:57
The figures reported by EastFruit speak for themselves: with nearly 57,000 tonnes of melons exported between January and November 2023, Morocco not only maintained its course but also recorded an increase of 25% compared to the entire previous year. . This exceptional performance even exceeds the five-year average, thus underlining the robustness of the sector despite difficult climatic conditions.

The growth in melon exports is largely explained by strong international demand, particularly between May and July 2023. This period saw a significant increase in sales, with export records achieved. Imports into France and Spain in particular have experienced remarkable expansion, reflecting the growing popularity of Moroccan melons on the European market.

France proved to be the main market for Moroccan melons, absorbing almost two-thirds of total exports. Spain also saw record demand in 2023, with an impressive increase in imports. Other European countries also contributed to exports, although to a lesser extent.

Despite these successes, Morocco faces increasing challenges linked to scarce rainfall and declining water reserves. Restrictions on water-intensive crops, including melon, highlight the urgency of sustainable solutions to address the water crisis.
