The Justice and Development Party (PJD) in Morocco deplored the arrest on Tuesday of the leader of the Tunisian Islamist group Ennahda, Rached Ghannouchi, following the police searched the premises of the body in Tunis and the home of the concerned. In a communiquéthe Moroccan Islamist party described Ghannouchi’s arrest as “arbitrary”, warning of a “worsening of this crisis which would block any possibility of resolving it through dialogue between all the parties in Tunisia”.
In a context of political crisis that Tunisia has been going through for several months, the PJD called for “raising the voice of reason, giving priority to wisdom and taking the initiative to release all political prisoners in Tunisia”, starting by Ghannouchi. Furthermore, the PJD called for “accelerating the opening of a national dialogue so that Tunisia and its people enjoy stability and prosperity”.
On Tuesday, Tunisian authorities closed all Ennahdha party offices in the country. In addition to Rached Ghannouchi, two other leaders of the formation were arrested.
Founded by Ghannouchi in 1981 illegally, under the name of Movement of the Islamic tendency, Ennahdha was authorized to participate in the elections in Tunisia, following the revolution of January 14, 2011. Exiled in London under the former regime of Ben Ali , the founder of the party returned to the country, where he was elected president of the Assembly of People’s Representatives, between 2019 and 2021.
