Expanding electric car charging points is a decisive factor in stimulating the demand for electric cars, and Morocco announced in 2020 the manufacture of a prototype of a smart charger for electric cars called “iSmart”, which can also be used at home.

Al-Harthy, who heads the company “Centrelec” specialized in energy solutions, confirms that “manufacture of electric charging mechanisms is easy and available locally, but this sector has not yet received large investments due to the weak demand for electric cars, which is a condition that will be available in the next few years.” .

This sector has significant growth potential in the long term, and it has attracted the interest of foreign investors, including the Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, who expressed his willingness to pump up to $100 million as a start to establish charging stations for electric cars, linking that to Morocco’s planning to build a factory for electric vehicle batteries.

In the past years, local and foreign fuel distribution companies have started providing charging points for electric cars at their stations, and the American company “Tesla” has established some electric charging points near classified hotels and major shops.

The charging points currently available in Morocco are still free, but the shift towards performance is expected in the coming years. Al-Harthy says that this sector needs long-term investments, and it will not be possible to reap profits from electric charging until following an average of 7 years.
