The influences of different cultures, which occur because the African country borders so many nations, make Morocco unique and exciting.
For decades, Arabs, Romans, Berbers, European colonizers, and especially Islamists, shaped not only the culture, but the style of the country. The contrast in customs, clothing, architecture and design piques the curiosity of people who visit.
On a recent trip to Marrakech, architects Andressa Cizeski and Lucia Conti, from CC Arquitetura, had a surprising and fascinating experience in the country.
“It’s all very different. There is nothing like it in the world. Despite having this old part of the Medina, where the Arabs live, we also see a very modern part. It is an unusual travel destination for Europeans, so they have a lot of structure to welcome, when we talk regarding hotels and gastronomy”, says Lucia.
Known as the “red city” for its terracotta-toned buildings, Marrakech has a homogeneous color, seen from the outside of the structures. The color that unifies the facades was chosen by the ancestors to reflect the color of the sand, and also because the city is very close to the desert and the heat, thus reducing the reflection of light. But Moroccan architecture is far from “predictable”. To make this observation, just explore the internal environments.
“From the outside the buildings look the same, but inside it is always a surprise. Every place we entered there was a lot of vegetation and internal gardens, as if it were an oasis inside the house, designed to bring freshness due to the high temperatures. The interior spaces are also very colorful in tiles, coverings and carpets. The diversity of colors is also seen on walls and even in food and seasonings”, highlights Andressa.
Moroccan references for Brazilian projects
Influenced by the artisanal aspect, colors and shapes of Morocco, Decortiles presents the Village series.
The releases are versatile, in 10x40cm formats and can be applied in different layouts, whether indoors, outdoors or even in swimming pools. The color variants include shades of terracotta, blue, green and gray.
