Morning following pill. The Sejm voted on the changes

The changes in pharmaceutical law being considered by the Parliament concern the restoration of over-the-counter access to the so-called emergency contraception for women from the age of 15. The so-called “morning following” pill was available without restrictions until July 23, 2017, but at the end of May 2017 the then parliamentary majority decided that women might only buy it with a prescription.

– It’s a pill that prevents conception. It does not allow the male and female gametes to fuse, so it should not be called an early abortion pill. It will be available from the age of 15 – explained the Minister of Health, Izabela Leszczyna, at the end of January. – It is important that the woman accepts it as soon as possible. The need to go to the doctor prolongs the procedure, and time is very important here, argued the deputy head of the Civic Platform.

The government bill was submitted to the Sejm on January 30. At the health committee meeting on February 8, the opposition requested, among other things: to raise the age of access to the pill to 18 years of age and to reject the project in its entirety. However, the amendments were rejected and the committee recommended adopting the draft in its original version.

There is a common opinion among the parliamentary majority that the project restoring access to the “morning following” pill is a lifeboat for the government, and at the same time a “consolation prize” for millions of Polish women. Why? Because – we wrote regarding it in Interia at the beginning of February – the projects to liberalize abortion law submitted by the Left and the Civic Coalition did not gain support within the October 15 Coalition.
