The investigation also reveals that It is the voters of LFI, RN and Reconqûete who are by far the most pessimistic. So, 39% of Jean-Luc Mélenchon voters are tempted to leave France, followed by Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour voters, at 36%.
On the other side of the political spectrum, only 14% of Emmanuel Macron voters express the wish to leave France due to the political and economic climate, or once more, 20% of Yannick Jadot’s voters and 21% of Valérie Pécresse’s voters.
Canada, dream destination for those who want to leave France
Among French people considering expatriation, North America (36%), with Canada, well ahead, at 28%, is ranked number 1 destination.. Expatriation in Europe ranks second, with Germany (7%), followed by Italy (6%), the United Kingdom (5%) and Spain (4%).
Africa is ranked third among expatriation destinations, with 9% of declared intentions, including 6% in North Africa. Finally, Asia and Australia both attract 6% of the vote.
For Bruno Jeanbart, director of political studies and vice-president of OpinionWay, “cThis survey confirms a form of weariness and disenchantment among the French with regard to their country, which all our surveys on distrust record. At a time when there is so much talk regarding immigration in the debate, the risk of seeing our young people emigrate cannot be neglected.”
Expatriation: why fewer candidates for departure in 2023?
First, the unemployment rate is 30% lower, at 7.4%. But this difference alone is not enough to explain this significant decline in the desire to expatriate, with the very notable exception, therefore, of young people, of whom 54% want to leave compared to 44% who want to stay.
The other explanation is thatin the meantime, “whatever it takes” and “magic money” have come and gone. All the political and economic crises of recent years have been “resolved”, or rather, defused, with billions in aid, bonuses, subsidies and replacement income. The extremely serious crisis of the Yellow Vests initiated the movement, validated the method. And the Covid period demonstrated through the absurd that it was possible to stay peacefully at home without doing anything, while continuing to receive a salary or alternative income!
The desire to leave the country is therefore less great for those who are settled, convinced that the French redistribution system is still capable of cushioning this crisis, and perhaps subsequent ones. Conversely, the world has become “less attractive.” In 2013, 50% of initial candidates wanted to go to North America (Canada, United States), and the United States was in the lead at 30%! From now on, “America” is no longer a dream, it’s Canada! Asia has also collapsed in the intentions of candidates for departure (6% compared to 12% in 2013). Finally, Israel is considered as a destination by 1% of respondents, compared to 3% in 2013. Conversely, Africa receives 9% of intentions, including 6% for North Africa, although it was absent declarations from 2013.
