Runny nose, cough, fever, muscle pain, headache, lack of energy and/or being bedridden – and in varying degrees of intensity: Austria is in the midst of the most severe flu epidemic in a long time. And there are still no signs of a trend reversal. Since the end of October, the number of cases of influenza and flu-like illnesses has been increasing week by week, data from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) show. According to Ages, last week the estimated number of flu cases in Austria was 5,849 people per 100,000 inhabitants. This is the highest incidence for at least ten years, according to the Ages to the STANDARD. Extrapolated this means: Within just one week there were 526,000 new cases of influenza and flu-like diseases. In calendar week 49 (December 5 to 11), there were around 390,000 new cases.
