The Minister of Hydraulics, Energy and Mines, Ibrahim Uwizeye, presented, on Friday July 29, 2022, the report on the major achievements of this ministry for the 4th quarter of the year 2021-2022. Four priority projects were executed, namely the construction of the Ruzibazi hydroelectric power station, the construction of the Cabu16 hydroelectric power station, the construction of the Jiji and Murembwe hydroelectric power station, as well as the development of the Rusumo regional hydroelectric power station. In the energy sector, the minister in charge of mines declared that the execution rate of the development works of the hydroelectric power station of Ruzibazi which gives 15 MW is 100% and the power station is already commissioned. That of Cabu 16 gives 20MW and its overall execution rate is estimated at 82%. The progress rate of the development and construction of the Jiji and Murembwe hydroelectric power station is estimated at 50%, while that of invoicing is 36%. Nevertheless, the rate of development of the regional hydroelectric power station of Rusumo Falls is estimated at 93%.
Minister Uwizeye also reported a project called “Project Sun Nyakiriza” which plans to build 122 improved homes and shelters signed, 150 health centers signed a feasibility study for the electrification of secondary and hilly centers in Burundi under negotiation. In the “Umuco w’iterambere” project, construction contracts for 55 schools and 54 health centers were awarded.
He added the electrification of 36 capitals of municipalities not yet electrified, including 21 municipalities that are not yet electrified. The financing agreement is already signed. Forty thousand meters were purchased from the factory, which reduces the cost of the meter, which was 229,000 FBu but is currently purchased at 130,000 FBu.
Water and sanitation sector
In the water and basic sanitation sector in rural areas, 30,000 water meters were purchased from the factory. The cost of the meter is 100,000 FBu instead of 213,000 FBu. The minister said that in the water supply projects, there was the construction of six water supply systems (AEP), Giserama, Jarama-uramba, Kivoma-Kayogoro, and AEP Karindo, totaling 195 km in the Bukinanyana, Buhinyuza and Kayogoro communes.
In urban areas, drinking water supply projects have generally resulted in the construction of AEP Rugazi in Bubanza to supply the northern part of the city of Bujumbura, the works have already been completed. There was also the strengthening of the drinking water supply network in the city of Gitega, i.e. 4.5 km of pipes are laid to link the Simba pumping station and that of Nyanzari to balance the city’s water network. of Gitega. Twenty-five percent of the works were carried out to increase the quantity of water in the localities of Gasenyi, Gatunguru, Carama and Gahahe by building the 21 km Martyazo AEP in Mubimbi commune.
Mining sector
In the mining sector, Minister Uwizeye specified that the draft Mining Code was analyzed by the Council of Ministers and was adopted with revision of the texts governing the mining and quarry sector in Burundi. Four hundred and fifty-nine ordinances were registered for quarries, the supervision of administrative staff and technicians for the formalization and supervision of activities in the mining sector, etc.
More than four billion FBu of revenue was recorded in the exploitation of the mines. Forty-five sites were inspected, six sites were audited and one thousand three hundred and forty-two transport authorizations and sixty-seven sample export authorizations were granted.
