1,033 people were killed in the floods caused by the monsoon rains that started in June in Pakistan, according to the latest toll issued by the National Disaster Management Authority, today, Sunday.
119 people died during the last 24 hours, while heavy rains, which affected more than 33 million people, are still falling in some parts of the country.
On Saturday, the Pakistani government announced that the flash and devastating floods that hit most of the country, and forced it to declare a state of emergency, affected regarding 33 million people severely across the country, and ordered thousands of residents of Swat province to evacuate their homes before the rivers overflowed.
The high death toll comes a day following Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif requested international aid to deal with the damage caused by the floods.
The Pakistani authorities estimate that the cause of the massive and devastating rains is climate change, stressing that the country is unfairly affected by the repercussions of environmentally irresponsible practices around the world.
