MIAMI (EFE).— The United States has already returned more than 92,000 people to more than 130 countries since President Joe Biden proclaimed an executive measure on June 4 that drastically restricts asylum applications on the border with Mexico.
This measure also influenced the 32% decrease in migrant detentions at that border in July, compared to the previous month, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) stressed in a statement.
The reduction represents the lowest monthly figure since September 2020, he said.
According to CBP, due to the new immigration guidelines there was “a significant increase in the number of migrants expelled and returned to their countries of origin and a decrease in the number of persons released (in the United States) pending their removal proceedings.”
Biden’s order has allowed U.S. authorities to deport those who do not meet strict asylum standards when a daily number of arrests at the border exceeds 2,500 for an average of seven days.
CBP reported yesterday that since June 5, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expelled or returned more than 92,000 people, including by operating more than 300 international repatriation flights.
The government recalled that “individuals and families who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to deportation.”
July apprehensions at ports of entry were also lower than in the same month in 2019, and lower than the monthly average for that entire year, the last comparable year before the pandemic.
In July, Border Patrol recorded 56,408 apprehensions at ports of entry along the southwest border, up from 61,325 in June, including people who showed up at ports of entry without an appointment using the CBP One online application.
Along the border, there were decreases in encounters of unaccompanied children (15%), single adults (27%), and family units (24%).
Since June 4, apprehensions at ports of entry have decreased by 55%, CBP said.
“In July, our border security measures enhanced our ability to enforce consequences for illegal entry, leading to the lowest number of encounters along the southwest border in more than three years,” said Acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller.
Panama flights
The US is “ready” to begin returning migrants from Panama this month.
Darien
In recent days, President Joe Biden said that his country is ready to begin an agreement with Panama this month to return migrants crossing the Darien jungle via flights, after holding a telephone meeting with his colleague José Raúl Mulino.
