more than 70 dogs lived crammed into a house in deplorable conditions

The local police area Lanaken-Maasmechelen (LaMa), in cooperation with the Flemish animal welfare inspection service, discovered between 70 and 80 dogs piled up in a house in Lanaken, Belga announces.

There was a “permanent smell of urine and faeces” in the house and the animals lived in deplorable conditions, as shown in the images below.

A couple was arrested. The man and the woman had already been sentenced in 2018 for animal abuse. Neighbors alerted the authorities. The animals were all taken in by the non-profit association “Dieren in Nood”.

This is a case of “animal hoarding”, that is to say that people welcomed animals without worrying regarding their living conditions. An investigation has been opened.
