More than 7 Belgian market gardeners specializing in the sale of fresh fruit and vegetables out of 10 were in violation following an inspection by the FPS Economy between June and December 2022, he said in a press release on Thursday. The checks concerned various regulations, including the indication of the country of origin and prices.
Since January 1, 2008, it is mandatory to correctly indicate the country of origin of certain foods. However, notes the FPS Economy, infringements are often observed.
Of the 283 traders checked during the survey, 202 were in breach of at least one of the legal obligations in this area, ie 71.4% of them. The Economic Inspectorate of the FPS Economy thus issued 208 warnings and drew up 52 reports noting the most serious offences.
Among these infringements, more than a third related to breaches of the rules relating to the indication of the country of origin when selling fresh fruit and vegetables on public markets (38.8%).
The public service also noted 196 infringements relating to the indication of the unit price of goods (i.e. 25.6% of all infringements committed) and 157 infringements relating to the general rules relating to the general indication prices (20.5%).
