More than 68,000 people visited different archaeological sites in Mexico on the occasion of the arrival of spring, with Chichén Itzá, one of the wonders of the world, being the one with the greatest influx, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) reported this Thursday.

The institute belonging to the Cultural Secretariat of the Mexican Government detailed in a statement that this number of visits to archaeological sites were recorded between this Wednesday and Thursday.

“Notwithstanding the fact that the change of season occurred on March 19, at 9:04 p.m., central Mexico time (03:04 GMT),” the organization stated.

As part of the so-called ‘Spring Equinox 2024’ operation, the INAH indicated that the archaeological zones with the greatest influx were Chichén Itzá, in Yucatán, in southern Mexico, and Teotihuacán, in the central State of Mexico, with 14,727 and 9,587 attendees , respectively.

It was followed by Las Labradas, in the northern state of Sinaloa, where 3,428 converged; Tulum, in Quintana Roo, in the Mexican southeast, with 2,947; and Calixtlahuaca, in the central State of Mexico, with 2,904 people.

Meanwhile, the INAH pointed out that in Monte Albán, in the southern state of Oaxaca, 2,240 tourists came, and in El Tajín, in Veracruz, on the Mexican Atlantic, 2,145 visitors.

Other pre-Hispanic sites that stood out among the preferences of equinox observers were Cholula, in Puebla, Uxmal, in Yucatán, and Palenque, in Chiapas.

To order the massive visit of attendees to heritage sites, the Ministry of Culture of the Mexican Government applies the ‘Spring Equinox 2024’ in conjunction with state and municipal authorities, as well as the National Guard and public security and security forces. civil protection to guarantee the integrity of people and preserve archaeological monuments.

On both days, Mexican authorities reported no setbacks or incidents in the archaeological zones. “It should be noted that the INAH will maintain the implementation of Operation ‘Spring Equinox 2024’ until Sunday, March 24,” he concluded.
