Greenpeace and other organizations bring down the three-meter-high “EU Mercosur Jenga Tower” – Chancellor Nehammer has to reject the trade pact at the EU-Latin America summit

Brussels/Vienna (OTS) On the occasion of the EU-Latin America summit that started today, Greenpeace and a coalition of more than 50 organizations are protesting in Brussels once morest the EU-Mercosur trade pact. During a protest, they toppled a ten-foot-tall “Jenga” cardboard tower made up of illustrated blocks highlighting the deal’s dangers to the environment, agriculture and human rights. Greenpeace is demanding that Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who is also taking part in the summit, give a clear rejection to EU-Mercosur.

“An agreement at EU-Mercosur would be fatal. The agreement exploits the environment, takes no account of human rights and puts domestic agriculture under massive pressure. Chancellor Nehammer must do everything in his power to stop this catastrophe pact,” says Melanie Ebner, spokeswoman for agriculture at Greenpeace in Austria. The aim of the EU Commission and the Mercosur countries is to agree on an additional protocol at the summit meeting on the alleged protection of the environment, the climate and human rights at EU-Mercosur.But the devil It’s in the detail: A leak in the package insert already showed that environmental violations would not result in any sanctions.
