More than 400% increase in migration flows to the island compared to 2023

Migrant arrivals in southern Crete have become a daily occurrence.

According to information from cretapost.gr, another boat was spotted this morning south of Gavdos, carrying 55 people who were picked up by a Liberian-flagged cargo ship.

In fact, according to sources, they are mainly men and at noon they are expected to arrive in Chania where they will be accommodated in the specially designed area of ​​Agyia.

The caravans with the immigrants

It is recalled that from Friday until this morning they arrived at Crete 272 immigrants in total. Cretapost.gr notes in detail all cases with immigrants who have arrived on the island of Crete since Friday, October 4.

First caravan: On Friday morning, the Port Authority of Chania was informed about the existence of a large number of foreigners on the beach “POTAMOS” in Gavdos.

Officers of the Port Authority of Gavdos went to the scene and located seventy migrants as well as an inflatable speedboat. The migrants were transported by passenger ferry to the port of Sfakia and from there to a temporary accommodation facility in Agia Chania and today they are in the Center of Malakasa. Two men from Sudan, aged 25 and 23, were arrested as traffickers.

Second caravan: On Friday evening, the Port Authority of Chania was informed by the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the LS-EL.AKT. for the identification and collection of 42 migrants (men) from the Portuguese-flagged cargo ship “BARBO G” in the maritime area of ​​25 nmi. south of Gavdos. The migrants transferred to a lifeboat of the LS-EL.AKT. and were transferred to Gavdos.

According to their statements, these are 28 people from Sudan, 5 from Bangladesh and 9 from Pakistan.

Third caravan: On Saturday morning, the Port Authorities of Chania and Rethymnon were informed by the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center about the existence of a vessel with foreigners on board in a difficult position, in the sea area of ​​32 N.M. southeast of Gavdos. The 35 migrants were picked up by the nearby cargo ship “MSC GIANNA III” of Panama flag sailing in the area. They were then transferred to a lifeboat of the coast guard and transported to the port of Gavdos and by passenger ferry to the port of Chora Sfakion. This was followed by their transfer to a temporary accommodation facility in Rethymno.

Fourth caravan: 44 migrants (42 men and two minors) were spotted on Saturday morning in the fishing shelter of Loutras, in southern Heraklion, as well as a wooden boat, without engines and with damage to its reefs. The immigrants, who according to their statement come from Pakistan and Sudan, received the necessary help in food and water, while their temporary accommodation was planned at the Port Fund, next to the KTEL Heraklion bus station.

According to newsbeast, as reported, they had started on the morning of Wednesday 02/10/2024 from the Tobruk region of Libya and had paid the sum of 9,000 euros for their transport. Three men aged 31, 19 and 24 were arrested as traffickers. The traffickers were taken to the public prosecutor where he prosecuted them criminally. They were then taken to the investigator where they were given a deadline to apologize on Tuesday.

Fifth caravan: Yesterday morning the Port Authority of Chania was informed of the existence of a boat with a sufficient number of foreigners, who had disembarked in the “LAKOUDI” area of ​​Gavdos. Officials of the Port Authority of Gavdos went to the spot and found 26 immigrants, all men.

Migration flows to the island increased by over 400% compared to 2023

Since the beginning of the year, more than 3,500 immigrants and refugees have arrived in Crete, while in the whole of 2023 this number was only 780. This is, in other words, an increase that exceeds 400%. The incidents last year were only 25, while in 2024, to date, there are more than 70. Characteristically, the Coast Guard estimates that the good weather prevailing in the Mediterranean will bring more and more migrants, while the numbers of arrivals are constantly changing.
