According to experts, there might still be thousands of bodies trapped under the rubble. The new figure brought the combined death toll in Turkey and Syria to almost 40,000.
At least 36,187 people have died and another 108,000 have been injured in Turkey due to the powerful earthquake from ten days agoindicated this Thursday (02.16.2023) the Afad emergency agency, while experts warn regarding the risk of epidemics due to the decomposition of corpses and the lack of hygienic measures.
The quake demolished thousands of buildings in the country, under which there might still be trapped tens of thousands of bodiesseveral Turkish and international experts warned, while another 50,000 have been badly damaged and will have to be demolished.
However, a 17-year-old girl was rescued alive this Thursday following spending 248 hours trapped in the rubble of a building in the province of Kahramanmaras, where the epicenter was recorded.
The region affected by the 7.8 earthquake extends over 100,000 square kilometers and some 14 million people live there.
According to Afad, more than 216,000 people have been evacuated from the most affected provinces.
The new figure brought the combined death toll for Turkey and Syria to 39,875.
