Data from Brazilian Association of Furniture Industries (Abimovel) indicate that the United States is the main buyer of Brazilian furniture, especially that made from wood. The latest sector report indicates that, in 2021, the North American country was the destination for 35.7% of products exported by Brazilian companies in the sector. In total, national exports of furniture and mattresses reached US$937.9 million that year.

In the ranking of world furniture production, Brazil appears as the 6th largest producer. According to Abimóvel, the country was one of the highlights of the 2023 edition and International Contemporary Furniture Fair, considered the largest contemporary furniture fair in North America, which took place in May this year. In addition to the United States, the country sells to 167 other destinations, including Chile (11.6% of exports), the United Kingdom (7.2%), Uruguay (6.8%) and Peru (5.7%).

In addition to furniture, the United States is one of the countries that buys the most mechanically processed wood from Brazil. Second information of the Brazilian Association of the Mechanically Processed Wood Industry (Abimci), the North American country is the main buyer of wooden frames and floors. Currently, this market represents 5.8% of the country’s exports, generating around US$3.6 billion.

With 11 years of experience in the area of furniture and wood exports, lawyer and legal consultant Dayane Marta Seminotti explains that the first step a company must take when starting to plan the export of products from these sectors is to observe the health legislation required by Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), linked to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), responsible for supervising wood import processes into the United States.

“This organization regulates several aspects of the process, for example the requirement for specific treatments on wood, such as drying in an oven or the use of chemical products”, he comments.

She further explains that there are other rules and other permissions that need to be obtained by the seller for the export to be authorized by the American government. However, the rules may change according to the legislation of each state in that country.

“Before scheduling export, you must be aware of the rules of the state of the recipient with whom you are negotiating. As for the weight limit of each container, the rule is determined considering the port of unloading of the goods due to the maximum weight limit allowed on the highways of each state”, he adds.

Number of ports place the United States as a preferred destination for Brazilian furniture and wood

According to lawyer Dayane Marta Seminotti, among the documents required for those who want to sell furniture and wood to the United States are the Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Landing and the Arrival Notice, which refers to the moment the product arrives at the American port.

She highlights that in addition to the technical part necessary to be able to export to that country, one of the advantages of this destination is its large number of ports. “This is a favorable factor when determining how the wood will be sent to the consumer/business partner. Added to this is the fact that Brazil has a vast territorial extension and, consequently, several regions destined for pine reforestation,” she says.

Seminotti also highlights the need for companies operating in this segment to invest in instruments capable of guaranteeing them a prominent position on the international scene. “Certifications such as those offered by the Forest Stewardship Council, for example, are a differentiator when it comes to wood exports, as they attest to forest management, the chain of custody and the traceability of the origin of the product. Furthermore, it is also necessary to invest in qualified professionals, in a technical and legal sense, to guarantee the competitiveness of companies operating in this segment”, he concludes.
