Be careful if you own a “Onewheel” single-wheel electric skateboard from the Future Motion group. In the United States, the Consumer Product Surveillance Commission (CSPC) is recalling more than 300,000 devices, sold between 2014 and September 2023 and also marketed in France. A fault may “stop balancing the user if the limits of the boards are exceeded, which presents a risk of accident which might lead to serious injuries or even death,” warns the CSPC in a press release.

Future Motion has received dozens of reports of incidents involving these electric skateboards in recent years, including four accidents that led to the user’s death between 2019 and 2021 and injuries such as head trauma, concussions, paralysis, upper body fractures, lower body fractures and ligament injuries. In at least three out of four fatal accidents, the user was not wearing a helmet, specifies the CSPC.

A new touch and sound functionality

The CSPC recommends that users of the Onewheel GT, Onewheel Pint the “Haptic Buzz” alert feature. It is a “tactile and audible warning system that provides the rider with a buzzing sensation and sound when approaching the limits of the board or in the event of a low battery or error condition », Explains the CSPC.

Future Motion developed the “Haptic Buzz” “to work in conjunction with the existing push safety feature to help users further recognize the board’s balancing ability, so they can lean back and slow down to avoid to crash,” explains the group in a press release. Beyond this update, it is strongly recommended to contact a specialized store to check that everything is working correctly.
