Over the past few weeks, the digital platform dedicated to the Volunteer Program for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games has received more than 300,000 applications, providing proof of the volunteer culture in France if necessary and further testifying to the global interest for what will be the biggest event ever in the country.
A 450 days from the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Summer Games, the Organizing Committee (OCOG) welcomed with pride – and no doubt enthusiasm – the first trends following the closure of the registration platform online on March 22 for those wishing to apply for a volunteer position.
Thus, it is clear that the various objectives set have been exceeded, even including Paris 2024 among the most attractive Games, with a total of more than 300,000 applications submitted.
Proof of this attractiveness for the French deadline, the level recorded far exceeds the results of Tokyo 2020, which had counted 204,680 filesand Rio 2016, which had registered 242,757 applications a few years earlier. The threshold for the London 2012 Games – the benchmark edition for Paris 2024 since the bid phase – should be approached and perhaps even beaten once the exact number of bids has been made official.
In detail, the tens of thousands of registrations come from the 101 departments of France and the Overseas Territories, with, moreover, representation on a planetary scale from more than 190 countries.
Young people are particularly mobilized among the vast contingents of candidates, a third of them being under 25 years old.
But as if to symbolize the spirit of sharing the candidacy and the organization of the Games, the experience constitutes an undeniable added value for the Paris 2024 Volunteers Programme, with a number of candidates having in the past been mobilized on major sporting events, some having even been present at the 1992 Albertville Winter Games, the last Olympic event hosted in France.
The participation of women is also significant in terms of the results noted by the OCOG, the latter representing no less than 55% of those registered.
Among the other key figures, it is also worth highlighting the interest expressed by more than 3,000 candidates with disabilities, i.e. the – unprecedented – level envisaged by Paris 2024, which hopes in fact develop and strengthen the dimension of inclusive Games for the event itself and for society as a whole.
On this point, more than half of the candidates have also indicated, in the context of the registration form and the questionnaire, a wish to be able to carry out missions both during the Olympic Games and during the Paralympic Games, knowing that Paris 2024 intends in fine recruit 30,000 people for the first meeting (July 26 to August 11, 2024) and 15,000 for the second (August 28 to September 8, 2024).
From now on, the applications submitted will be carefully studied until the end of the summer of 2023, with in particular proposals for interviews or even additional tests according to the profiles likely to be selected.
Notifications of the assignment of a mission offer will then be communicated to the selected candidates between September and October this year, before the Paris Volunteers Convention 2024 is installed during the spring of 2024 in the Ile-de-France region.
It will then be a question of presenting in the smallest details the expected missions and starting the training of the 45,000 volunteers of the Games who will finally receive the uniforms made by the equipment manufacturer and Partner of the Games, decathlon.
