Cono Gumina, president of the Venezuelan Anticancer Society (SAV), made an assessment of the cancer situation in the country, which he considered “very complex.” He highlighted two figures: 32 thousand deaths from cancer and 80 thousand new cases diagnosed in advanced stages, for the year 2023.
He highlighted four important points for the treatment of this disease: “prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care.”
In his opinion, one of the main problems when treating a patient with a cancerous pathology is the treatment, due to the lack of drugs in the country.
For example, for radiation treatment, only 22 linear medical accelerators are operational in Venezuela, Gumina said.
“At the Venezuelan Anticancer Society we do not offer radiation therapy, but chemotherapy treatment. And we have tried to supply the medications for our patients with our alliances with other groups,” he stressed.
He reiterated that the aim is to raise awareness among the Venezuelan population through screening programs for all cancers that affect men and women.
