The US Coast Guard has reported that since the beginning of this year more than 3,000 Cuban migrants who tried to enter the US illegally have been returned to the island.
Last week, the US Coast Guard returned 47 migrants who had sailed to Florida to Cuba, bringing the total to 3,045 since January. Thirty-six men, seven women and four girls were on the boat. Mostly from the provinces of Matanzas and Villa Clara, they have been involved in three separate illegal exit operations that were intercepted by US authorities. Three of the Cuban citizens were serving a suspended sentence at the time of their departure and are now being tried once more. This is reported by the Cuban news agency ACN.
The administration of US President Joe Biden introduced new migration regulations at the beginning of the year. They plan to issue 30,000 visas every month for people from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti who want to enter the country. At the same time, illegal border crossings are now being deported. Anyone who is apprehended also loses the opportunity to legally travel to the USA in the future. In addition to the visa program, a two-year residence permit in the USA now requires a sponsor called a “patrocinador” who vouches for the person entering the country.
Since 2021, over 391,000 Cubans have left the country for the United States. This corresponds to around three percent of the population. With the entry into force of the agreement, the number of Cuban migrants apprehended at the border fell from 44,078 in December to 6,548 in February.
The Cuban migration authorities recently reaffirmed their commitment to “regulated, safe and orderly migration” and warned of the life-threatening dangers of crossing the Florida Strait by sea, which is often done with home-built boats in poor condition. At the same time, the Cuban government calls on the United States to fully comply with the existing bilateral migration agreements and expresses its willingness to continue talks on migration issues.
