In the past two years, the number of people suffering from hunger in the world has doubled, according to Save the Children. Ethiopia, Yemen, South Sudan, Afghanistan and Somalia are experiencing severe droughts, said the organization, which fights for children’s rights. In addition to the already existing conflicts and the Covid pandemic, the drought has made life in these areas even more miserable.
The organization called for global action to address these issues. Currently, they have set aside nearly three billion dollars to prevent famine in 19 countries. In addition, Save the Children also distributes essential items including food and financial aid in various countries.
The organization stated that the world is facing the worst global famine in the last decade, and in many places, people are forced to adopt unsanitary methods to survive.
About 13 crore people were suffering from hunger two years ago, but according to the current estimates, 28 crore people are suffering from severe hunger today.
The organization said that the ongoing war in Ukraine had disrupted the global food system, and that wheat and oil prices had soared in many places. Food crises have become acute in countries from Afghanistan to Yemen and the Sahel region of West Africa.
