More than 215 dead and hundreds missing after Helene passed through the US

The number of deaths after Hurricane Helene passed through EU has exceeded 215 this Friday, while rescue teams continue to work tirelessly in the search for hundreds of missing people. This occurs just over a week since the cyclone made landfall as a category 4.

According to the CBS channel, the number of victims has reached 219, while NBC reports “at least 215.” In addition, the chances of finding “hundreds of missing people” alive after the passage of this hurricane that impacted northwest Florida on the night of September 26 have been reduced.

Helene’s passage through the US leaves hundreds missing

Search and rescue teams continue recovery efforts in the southeastern United States this Friday, facing impassable roads, collapsed bridges and flooded towns.

More than 700,000 homes still lack electricity, especially in North Carolina, where the death toll exceeds one hundred.

In Buncombe County, where the affected town of Asheville is located, more than 200 people are reported missing, according to the local Sheriff’s Office, Quentin Miller.

“There are still isolated communities, with difficulties in obtaining basic products,” declared the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Deanne Criswell, who reiterated that the priority continues to be the search for the missing.

This federal agency has sent up to 1,500 emergency personnel and distributed approximately $45 million in aid to those affected in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia.

Criswell will remain in North Carolina until the affected areas achieve some stabilization. Since yesterday, they have the support of up to a thousand active soldiers sent by the US Department of Defense to help in this work.
