On the 22nd, the number of new coronavirus infections (COVID-19) in Japan reached 200,000, the highest for three days in a row.

On the same day, local broadcaster NHK reported that 195,161 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Japan were counted.

According to the report, it is the highest record for three days in a row, following 152,536 on the 20th and 186,229 the day before.

In Tokyo, the highest number of new confirmed cases since the outbreak of COVID-19 occurred in 22 out of 47 prefectures (regional local governments) nationwide, with 34,995 new confirmed cases recorded on the same day.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on the same day that “the government is not considering new restrictions on behavior.”

Instead, the Japanese government plans to focus on providing additional vaccines and securing beds for healthcare workers and the elderly at serious risk.

In addition, it was decided to maintain social and economic activities as much as possible in the face of COVID-19 and shorten the waiting time for close contacts from 7 days to 5 days.
