Summer weather at the turn of the year: The German Weather Service has recorded the warmest New Year’s Eve since weather records began. The temperature rose above 20 degrees at four stations in Germany.
The year 2022 ended with the warmest New Year’s Eve in Germany since weather records began in the 19th century. The German Weather Service (DWD) recorded record values for December 31st.
In Wielenbach in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau, 20.8 degrees were measured around 2 p.m. and 20 degrees in Munich. In Baden-Württemberg, 20.3 degrees were measured in Müllheim near Freiburg and in Ohlsbach. According to the DWD, the previously highest temperature on New Year’s Eve was 17.0 degrees in 1961 in Müllheim. In 2021 it was 16.9 degrees warm in Freiburg im Breisgau.
It stays warm
With up to 20 degrees in the southwest, exceptionally warm weather is also expected in Germany on New Year’s Day. On Sunday it will be cloudy to overcast in the northwestern half and there will still be some rain locally in the morning, the DWD announced. Otherwise it will be cloudy with friendly intervals and largely free of precipitation, the sun will often shine in the south and south-east.
Furthermore, it is unusually mild with maximum temperatures in the north mostly around 13 degrees, otherwise 13 to 18, in the southwest again locally up to around 20 degrees. In the north and in the low mountain ranges, stormy winds are still to be expected.
