more than 15,000 people have entered Spain illegally since January

Dn a press release published on Monday, September 19, the IGC warned that since the beginning of the year, more than 15,000 people had entered Spain illegally. Among them, regarding 1,350 migrants arrived in the Balearic Islands (islands facing the Algerian coast) in more than 800 boats which reached the Spanish coast, we learn from the country’s official agency, EFE.

“A record year”

According to this NGO, 2022 is already “a record year”according to data provided by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, particularly with regard to the “canary road” which saw its entries increase by 25%, with more than 10,000 migrants this year, highlighting that 978 people lost their lives on the way.

The Spanish association also warned once morest “a heavy workload” suffered by coastal operational service centers (COS), due to the large influx of immigrants. “These operations rooms are even more overwhelmed during the summer season, because due to the good weather, the mafias become much more active”we read in the press release.

The IGC also deplores a lack of personnel in the security services responsible for border surveillance, and calls for an increase in personnel and the “modernization of its ships”.

As for the border crossings of the enclaves of Sebta and Melilia, the Spanish NGO urges the government to “to study the creation of a permanent border control unit and to effectively seal the two borders with Morocco, favoring the use of drones, which offer much more precise data”.
