More suitable rehabilitation for patients… A day hospital is set up in Vence

Bicycle ergometer, treadmill… It transpires in one of the bright rooms on the ground floor of the Miner’s House. Early morning “Gym Tonic” atmosphere. But, contrary to appearances, it is not a gym, but a rehabilitation and rehabilitation center. Located in Vence, in a two-hectare park, this private non-profit health establishment was created in 1946 to treat the respiratory pathologies of mine workers; hence its name.

Since 1992, the Miner’s House – authorized by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and financed by Social Security – has offered a comprehensive exercise rehabilitation and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programme. Patients over the age of 18 suffering from chronic cardio-respiratory pathology and requiring outpatient care stay there for 4 to 6 weeks.

Full hospitalization includes 80 beds and brings together 23 professions. Psychologists, dieticians, tobacco specialists, social workers, physiotherapists and other specialized personnel work with the nursing and medical team.

Younger patients

“The three main objectives are the resumption of physical activity, the prevention of cardiorespiratory risk factors – through targeted educational actions – and the evaluation of the return to a fulfilling social and professional life”, summarizes Jean Tessier, the director of the follow-up and rehabilitation care establishment.

Since March, the Minor’s House has been offering a new service: the day hospital. “This opening responds to a real demand on the territory. For some people, depending on the pathology and age, complete hospitalization is necessary. But we also have other patient profiles. Younger (between 40 and 50 years old ), more independent, they have a professional activity but also a family life or young children. These people often miss out on rehabilitation, because they cannot be hospitalized for several weeks”, contextualise Jean Tessier.

This is not without danger: these patients often leave the hospital weakened, and by ignoring rehabilitation, they increase their risk of recurrence. “It may be, for example, a fairly young person who has had a heart attack. She would need follow-up to change her lifestyle: get back to sport, quit smoking”, details the director.

With the opening of the day hospital, patients can now come for a day or only for a morning several times a week, and benefit from the same care as patients in full hospitalization. “They can spread out their sessions and go on with their lives without feeling blocked by rehabilitation.”

For Dr. Vlad Molfea, cardiologist at the Miner’s House, this new service was a necessity. “Today, hospitals no longer have the time to monitor patients. Here, we can offer them a tailor-made program. This makes it possible to catch up with patients who would slip through the cracks.”

This day hospital also allows for prevention. “Overweight patients, diabetics…: the workshops allow them to learn regarding their pathology, treatments and risk factors.”

To date, this possibility of rehabilitation remains unknown to patients and treating physicians. And it’s unfortunate, as Sandy Dominguez, nurse points out, with an example: “In the event of a heart attack, the positive impact of rehabilitation is measurable from the first month.”
