Apple made less sales last quarter than in the same period last year. Fewer computers and tablets were sold. The iPhone manufacturer earned even more money from the sale of iPhones and services such as the sale of apps in the App Store.
Traditionally, the first quarter, the second of the broken financial year of the tech group, is a lesser period for Apple. After the holidays and without new products, turnover is considerably lower every year than in the last quarter of the calendar year.
In recent years, Apple has managed to achieve sales growth in the first calendar quarter, compared to the same period in the previous year. But this year there has been a drop in turnover.
In the first three months of this year, the iPhone producer earned 94.8 billion dollars (85.8 billion euros). That’s $2.5 billion less than in the first three months of last year.
American consumers are holding their purse strings for fear of a recession. As a result, people postpone the purchase of expensive products, such as those from Apple. The tech group sees this reflected in the decreased turnover from the sale of Mac computers and iPads, for example.
iPhones are very important to Apple
Apple mainly relies on the sale of iPhones. Worldwide, $ 51.3 billion worth of iPhones were sold last quarter. That is slightly more than the turnover of 50.6 billion in the first three months of 2022.
That does not mean that Apple has also sold more iPhones. The latest models are a lot more expensive than previous generations. As a result, the tech company can make more turnover while sales are falling. Apple has been keeping sales numbers a secret for years.
The services branch is becoming more important for the American company every year. This includes, for example, the sale of apps in the App Store, music service Apple Music and video service Apple TV. Service revenue increased from $19.8 billion to $20.9 billion year-over-year.
